2 Chronicles 20:12

12 O our God, won’t you stop them? We are powerless against this mighty army that is about to attack us. We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help.”

Go Deep

Carlos_WBSGbioCarlos from the Carlos & Joy Show shares how this verse turned into a prayer for him and his wife.

If you’ve ever said this phrase, or felt it to be true, you are not alone – And you wouldn’t be entirely incorrect.

It’s no secret that our lives seem to be getting more busy and day after day our world seems to be spinning out of control. Thankfully, as Christians, we know who is ALWAYS in control and we call Him “Father.”

In 2 Chronicles, Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were in a terrible position. They were being attacked by an overwhelming enemy and felt powerless to defend themselves. Does this sound familiar? Being overwhelmed by something and feeling helpless?

I’ve experienced similar situations where I’ve felt that nothing could be done from a human perspective. Just this year, my wife and I have navigated our first year of marriage, leaving family and friends to move across the country to a new community, a new church home, new jobs, and the loss of a new job, as well as the birth of our brand new baby boy.

While most of these events were blessings and we trusted God in them, at times it did feel like it was too much – that we couldn’t stomach one more massive change or another course correction – we were overwhelmed by life. Just like Jehoshaphat, we cried out to God with a simple prayer saying, “LORD, We do not know what to do” (2 Chronicles 20:12).

We believe that our God hears us and we trust that He cares. He is our present help in times of trouble and like Jehoshaphat, we look to God for hope and mercy.

This faith was a picture of the strength that comes from life in Christ and a testimony to our friends, family, and others. This simple prayer of “LORD, we do not know what to do” but trusting that He does, encouraged the people of Judah and our prayers can do the same for the people in our lives.

Notes from the Beyond Suffering Bible

When You Feel Overwhelmed – Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were in a terrible position. They were being attacked by an overwhelming enemy and felt powerless to defend themselves. At times, we experience similar situations; we feel that nothing can be done from a human perspective. Jehoshaphat cried out, “We do not know what to do”; but actually he did—he looked to God for hope and mercy. His prayer encouraged his people. Our prayers can do the same.

This reminds me that I am not alone is feeling overwhelmed and encourages me to keep praying through troublesome times. Keep talking to God and it will get better.

    • Kendall

I think it is Romans 8:26 that even if we don’t know what to say when we pray,
that if we pray the Holy Spirit gives our prayer’s straight to GOD. So have faith that GOD hears our cries for help even when we don’t know how to pray.

    • Kary Blackburn

      He is in control always.

  2. Loran

I believe God hears me, too. I’ve definitely gone to him when I’ve been beyond overwhelmed! Especially lately!! Thank you for the scripture that supports this. I know I’ve heard the stories from the Bible, but I’m not good at recalling them, and it’s reassuring to have someone point them out.

  3. Jennifer

I thank God every day for his hope and mercy! I am so glad that I have a Heavenly Father that loves me and is in control!!

  4. Ginger

This encourages me that when I feel like giving up that I need to keep praying. Thanks for sharing. This group has really helped me and I am so thankful for each one of the messages that have been shared so far.

I feel like that now I’m finishing up my masters in occupational therapy, I am recently divorced raising a 6 year old. Trying to work go to school do my homework and help my son with him has not been a easy task. I seem to
Never find enough hours in the day. But I know God is there for me because without him I would surely drown.

Tammy, praying for you – that you will find in each day exactly what you need for that day!

  6. kelly

That’s a perfect post for me today. I am drowning in debt because we made a big move from down south to up North to be closer to our family. The closing costs were way more than they were when we purchased a house down South and the mortgage is double what we were paying. It’s not because we got a house that was twice as expensive, it’s because property taxes up North are over 5 times the amount in the South and car insurance is way higher too. So we had to use credit cards to pay for some things since our cash got eaten up by other moving expenses. I’m substitute teaching but it’s not regular enough hours so I’m looking for a part time job and having a hard time because I drop off and pick my daughter up from school so my availability is mainly nights and weekends. I feel overwhelmed. I don’t know how we are going to pay our bills. I can only have faith that God will show us the way.

    • Kristy

Kelly, will be praying for you to receive financial relief soon! I know exactly how you feel being overwhelmed with debt. Have you tried Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University? If not I would like to send it to you, I know the program is expensive. Please let me know how I could contact you by email and I will send you info to have access to taking the class. It really has helped me a lot by showing me how to organize what little I have coming in and not feel as stressed paying my bills.

      • kelly

        Hi Kristy
thank you so much for your offer to send me the Dave Ramsey course for free. that is so very very kind of you. We actually went through the course several years ago. My husband and i need to go through the principles he taught and get back on track, you’re right. thank you for reminding us that there is a way to make it less stressful. we need to take control of the situation and not let it take control of us.

    • Christa Cain

Wow. THis was a perfect post for me too. For the exact same reason as you! I too recently moved to be with family and all my bills are twice as high and we feel drowning in debt. Just know you are not alone. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

      • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Christa, praying for you as well and the financial situation you are in but didn’t expect. Praying for God’s provision and care.

      • kelly

Christa, I will pray that the Lord shows you a way through the financial issues.New beginnings can be great. Let’s have faith that the Lord will show us what we need to do to get back on track financially. Thanks for commenting on my post and letting me know I’m not alone in my struggle.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Kelly, praying for you. Praying that you see and experience the provision of God in just the right ways and at just the right times.

    • Profile photo of Lisa

Kelly, I know how overwhelmed you must feel. My husband quit his job almost 2 years ago to start a small towing & repair business, because driving a big truck over the road was becoming too hard and stressful. He wanted to provide a service for our small community where the people would get quality work and not be charged an outrageous amount for that work. Even though we started out ok in the beginning considering we didn’t have any extra money to put into the business and we were already struggling…it became harder and harder as he is very understanding when some could not pay for all of the repairs. Needless to say, this started the downward spiral into more and more debt. Like you, our credit cards had become a source to pay the utilities and other bills to stay afloat. Now we are at the point where everything has come full circle and we are struggling to pay the smallest of bills. My income is the only steady one coming in as all the money he makes goes to pay the bills for the business. I wake up every morning wondering how we are going to make it through this but have to remind myself that God will provide. Keep the faith and He will show us the way. Will keep you in my prayers.

      • kelly

thank you for commenting on my post Lisa. Starting a new business is hard, I know. I started a business once and like your husband I was kindhearted and that led to me putting in special orders for customers even though I had to meet minimum purchase requirements for some companies so I ended up buying more than I could sell. It spiraled out of control for me too and i ended up having anxiety attacks. If you and your husband have prayed about it and believe the business is what He wants you to be doing then He will find a way for it to all work out. God Bless.

    • Shawn

I’m in a similar situation. Debt. I stay at home with our kids and we have no family near. I’m the only one to pick up and drop off my daughter from school. I’m only available weekends. We have to learn to put God first and trust him to make a way.

      • kelly

I personally think that in some situations debt is a way for satan to pull us away from God. We stress out about it and worry about how we are going to survive. That’s what satan wants us to do, but God wants us to rely on him and have faith that He will show us a way. Getting into debt in the first place is something God wants us to avoid, I’m sure, however in some situations (starting a new business, moving, losing a job..etc) debt just happens. I wish you the best Shawn and hope that the Lord leads you to the perfect job so that you can continue to be there for your daughter but can still earn some money.

  7. Mary Beth

My husband has had disabiling pain for 5 years. I would like to see him energized and healthy. So I do what I can, pray for him and we pray together. I know God is with us.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Mary Beth, we will be praying for your husband and a healing that points to God’s goodness.

  8. Sarah Martinez

I have had anxiety since I was 9 years old… I’ve had panic attacks you whole life. And some days are so much more than I can bare… this is true. The bible says God is in Perfect Controll of His power. Therefore we can go to Him and say, I don’t know what to do and He promises to comfort us… Somedays I will have panic attack aftee panic attack feelong helpless, terrified, and with so much worry that I can’t even focus on my job or my daughter, but during those times I can say jesus I don’t know what to do, in faith that he will guide me on the right path and give me a peace beyond anything I can understand.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Sarah, we are praying for you. Panic attacks are so physically and emotionally exhausting, we are so sorry. We are praying for your healing from them.

  9. Amy Wilson

I am definitely at the point where I am so exhausted, mentally and physically that I have given everything over to God. Today is yet another difficult day for me this year: it would have been my Mom and Dad’s thirty-second anniversary, but my Dad passed away in January. Six weeks later my son was diagnosed with brain cancer. Today he is having a follow-up MRI. This has been such a long, hard, year. I am trying very hard to stay focused on being faithful, and allowing God to guide me and comfort me. I am so grateful to have found this group.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Amy, thank you for sharing part of your story with us – we are taking it as an invitation to pray for you and your family! We are praying for the grief that comes when a person loved is no longer with us, we are praying for your son and his health and the Doctor’s who are overseeing his treatments. May the Lord bless you and keep you and make his face to shine upon you.

  10. Veta Sheridan

I am praying every day for a miracle. I know GOD works miracles because he threw me my bedroom door during a tornado here in Alabama on April 27, 2011. But right now in the midst of my suffering, I need a big miracle. I pray that GOD grants me my request.

  11. Profile photo of Diana

What a good reminder. I know He’s with me. I can see it in the little things if I pause and look. I feel overwhelmed a lot due to cancer care and all these doctors appointments. Yet I know God has it all under control and everything will be OK in the end.
When I feel overwhelmed, it helps just shut out the rest of the world/problems and just spend time alone with God.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Diana, praying for you as you walk through the treatments for cancer and other things.

  12. Debra

I love that we can be real with God our Father! He knows anyway, so why not tell Him and trust Him!! Thanks for the message, Carlos.

  13. Angela

I don’t know how many times I’ve said similar words in the last few months. Only instead of saying, “I don’t know what to do,” I’ve been saying, “I don’t know how much longer I can do this!” Between a demanding full time job and taking full time night classes to get a degree in an entirely new field, sometimes it feels like God is asking entirely too much of me. But maybe that’s just it. He didn’t ask me to do it alone or on my own strength. I think this morning it is time to adopt Jehoshaphat’s prayer and then wait for His response. I cannot help but believe He has something waiting for me on the other side of such a prayer.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Thanks for sharing Angela, we are glad you are a part of this group!

  14. Profile photo of Jennie

Thank you for sharing your testimony! IThis message came at just the right time for my son! He is overwhelmed with school work. I will pass today’s reading on to him!

  15. Profile photo of Tparrott88

Nearly everyday when I log on to read, it is exactly what I need to hear. My husband and I are going through a couple big “situations” that we really have no control over. As a control freak it’s seemingly more are more difficult for me to handle. I find myself feeling like I can’t even everyday. I find myself saying the same prayer over and over everyday, knowing his is going to take time to work itself out.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Praying for you to allow God to have control and be in all the details of your situations!

  16. Bernice Smith

Amen. Thank you Carlos. Feeling overwhelmed this morning scrolling down emails and read the first line of what you are saying. Jesus really knows what I need and He is really going through with me. Thanks again!

  17. Floyd

Today’s post means a lot because when there’s no were to go we can always count on God he’s always there to listen and knows everything that happened in our lives back in May of this year I almost committed suicide and it was a miracle but he saved me. So I know it he does answer her cries

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Floyd, we are so glad you didn’t end your life! We praise God that you see your rescue and know he heard your cries for help.

  18. Andrea Stephenson

Thanks for this message today! God is an on time God and He will lead and answer us if we just cry out to Him!

Lord I don’t know what to do about Nickoy but You do! I cry out to you Lord for I am feeling overwhelmed! Lead me Father, overwhelm me with your mercy and grace! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen!

  19. Lisa Aly

Amen. Yes, I was in that situation recently. I cried out to God, “Fix this!” He did.

  20. Profile photo of Carol

It is interesting how so many times (I’d dare say 99% of the time), being human we try to fix situations and dig our own way out of the trenches. I’m doing some self-talk here too—-rather than struggle, worry and be anxious how much simpler to acknowledge “We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help”?
This blends in with Betty Rock’s post earlier this week–“We trust God with the big things like our salvation”. How difficult it is to give up control, admit we are 100% totally dependent on His strength, His grace, His mercy and His help. I pray God helps me to remember “the battle is not mine but the Lords” and provides the grace to continually surrender all battles to Him. Thank you Wayfm for these daily reminders of the love and faithfulness of our great God!

    • Profile photo of Asher

Well said, Carol. It’s always my first instinct to be accomplishing something, so when troubles come, I’m all about fixing (and worrying) about them! Admitting that we don’t know what to do is humbling and helps us see God’s plan.

  21. Profile photo of Debbie

There are days I question my sanity. Thankfully I know God has it all under control. I know I can’t go this life alone, HE is always there with me. Praise God!

Thank you for sharing your families struggles Carlos. This morning I’m facing one of my biggest fears. It may not sound like much but I’m going to mediation for custody of my youngest son. The attorneys and everything online says that my son’s father will gain partial custody, maybe even 50/50. I live in Florida. It wouldn’t be a problem but my son’s father has been a drug addiction for 20 years and left him when he was 2 for drugs. He visited him consistentlyrics for 8 months and then just stopped one day. He hasn’t seen him on over a year and within that year he overdosed on heroin, went to rehab, and went to detox twice. My son now has extreme separation anxiety, anger issues, is hitting me and his teachers, ando I feel so overwhelmed. I am alone for the first time in my life and have no family where I live. If you read my post today please pray for us. I go to mediation in less than an hour. Thank you for your encouragingredients post. I’ve felt like I can’t handle one more massive change in my life for a while now. I’m trusting that God’s will is done no matter what the outcome and that he holds our lives in his hands.

    • Christina

I pray that God gives you the strength and patience that you will need for this time in your life. I have been/am going through a similar situation, and frustration seems to be the tip of the iceberg. I pray that your child gets the help he needs to solve his anger issues as well, whether it’s simply a phase he will outgrow, or if he needs professional help in some capacity. God is with you always, and it can be difficult to understand sometimes, but He has a plan just for you. 😊

    • Donna

Partoftheredeemed, I just prayed for you, and will continue to pray. I went through something very similar with my own children and ex-husband. I pray for peace for you, whatever the outcome. Know that God is in control, and whatever happens, it will be okay. Lay all your fears on Him, and trust that is true. If you can rely on God’s perfect control over everything, He will carry you through this. God bless you and your son.

    • Profile photo of Unathi

Partoftheredeemed, I’ll pray and trust God for the best outcome. The best outcome may not be what you’re expecting, but God is faithful in ALK things, and He cares for your son as well. You are not alone in this. Trust Him, praise Him.

      • Profile photo of Unathi

Praying for you this morning and will keep you in my prayers. I too am facing a custody battle and it’s scary as it’s your child. Keep the faith and put on the “armor of God” this morning; Ephesians. He is with you and holding your hand right beside you. Stay strong. Prayers and God Bless You.

    • James

POTR, I pray that you find peace with God, trust in him with all your heart. He will provide the right path for you and your family. It’s hard, believe me, but we have to press into him. In the name of Jesus, amen!

    • Profile photo of Asher

One verse I’ve found encouraging is 2 Sammuel 22:30: “In Your strength I can crush an army, with my God I can scale any wall.” Praying for you, Partoftheredeemed.

Part of the Redeemed, we are praying for you! We stand with you trusting that God sees and knows what your son needs and that there will be a peace experienced by you that confounds everyone who interacts with you!

  23. Gaary Miller

tis like every morning or so that GOD lays down on His cloud and looks over the side and says “where is Garry this morning I need a good chuckle”. I am sure I am not the only one GOD likes to mess with. But I say “bring it GOD” cuz I am gonna use “You” the power of the Holy Spirit in me to get through it. So if I am gonna go through this so are You. So I drag GOD through it with me knowing I got better choices His way than mine. I remember a movie called Pollyanna where a lil girl goes through the town and meets people going through tough or sad times and helps them to find something to be “glad about” while they are going through it. Galations 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit,..Notice Walk is capitalized, it is am action word but it is in His Power the Holy Spirit you should be using, not your power. Your power would be a small walk. Use His Power of the Holy Spirit in you and make Him go through your trials and sadness with you. It is better you are not alone in life. 16 so go now and Walk life,,,,,,,,

    • Teepee

I love that movie! Thank you for reminding me of it

  24. Eileen Norment

It reminds me that nothing is to big for our God to handle, we just have to call on Him and trust that He hears our prayers.

  25. Veronica Benton

I feel as of right now my faith n trust in the Lord are not as they should be. I have lost my financial ability to pay my household expenses, my husband pays all his money to the woman he is living with instead of his childsupport. I have done everything that I know that I can through the legal route to get him to do so. Without bills paid my children n I will lose our home and he doesn’t care. I know how I am to trust the Lord, that he will always provide and never give me more than I can handle. However, that is where I am struggling right now because I am not seeing that proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. I love my God more than and above all others. I do devotionals and journaling every morning and evening, as well as read my bible throughout the day. I turn my fears and worries over to him many times throughout the day, but still have them there so feel as if I am doing something wrong otherwise wouldn’t I have peace? Wouldn’t believe that all these things are going to be fine? I would like to ask for prayers to strengthen my faith, trust and bring about peace in knowing my God has this handled, please, thank you.

    • Profile photo of Unathi

I’ll be praying for you, Veronica. God is faithful.

    • James

I completely understand how you feel. I have been going through some major problems that I created in my life. I am reading, and listening to journals, the bible, Christian movies, all to be inspired. I have found that each day you must wake up and thank God for what you have, the health to fight, take action on what you have control over in a Christian way. Pray for everything all the time, but take action on what God tells you to do. In your heart and soul you know what you can and can’t do. For me, that is where I can find God, deep, deep down. It’s hard, but prayer all the time for everything will work. God will guide you on the right path, in Jesus name, amen.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Veronica, praying for you. A favorite verse of mine is found in Habakkuk 3:19 and in the Amplified Version of the Bible it really is impactful. “The Lord God is my strength [my source of courage, my invincible army]; He has made my feet [steady and sure] like hinds’ feet And makes me walk [forward with spiritual confidence] on my high places [of challenge and responsibility].” Praying that you will find the strength to walk on the places of difficulty!

I really like this translation of this verse. As a mother if 4, business owner with my husband, groups leader in church, etc, I often feel overwhelmed.
I struggle with alcoholism, and find myself turning there instead if orayer to overcome.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Mollie, praying for you in your struggle. Praying that you begin to see and believe that you’re an overcomer! (perhaps Mandisa’s song Overcomer would be an encouragement?)

  27. Charmell Carr

I have a habit of panicking when something happens that I have no control over. Last friday night my kids and I were on our way home from a church event and my car throws a rod in the engine. We made it home but this took place after losing my aunt to alzheimer’s and a 17 day old cousin within 24 hours of each other and getting the news that one of my compassion sponsored children (whom I’ve had for 5 years) can no longer be in the program due to unrest in India.
Basically, my car is undrivable and needs an engine. The repairs are more than I owe and more than the car is worth. Being a single mom I’m spread thin already getting everyone where they need to go everyday. Now, I don’t have that means. But I know I have grown in my relationship with God because I have not panicked and I have a peace that everything is going to be ok. I just need to be patient and keep talking and listening. God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

  28. Cynthia Klausing

Have been praising Him in the storm and clinging to our faith . The last two years have been one thing after another. First , my husband of 36 years lost his job ( at the age of 61) and has been unable to find work at that level. Did find a low stress job at minimum pay but those hours have now been cut. Our third son had to declare bankruptcy due to a housing situation back in college where the landlords sued the boys when they moved out of an unsafe housing situation. Our Fourth son had a stroke this summer at 23 years old . The hits keep coming and we struggle not to fall into despair and lose our focus. I wish the small group was not endidng. It has been a struggle but God is faithful !

Waking up many days to the crushing pressure of anxiety I cry out to God for His hope, His plans, His purpose and His mercy! In my own strength at times I cannot see beyond the fear and doubt that threatens to consume me yet He remains faithful…He lifts my eyes back to His gaze and draws me close…He gives me just what I need to move into the day…one foot in front of the other and I can walk in faith knowing that in Him I can do all things! THANK you for this encouraging study! It has blessed me each day and helps keep my eyes on HIM!

  30. Ms Judi

Thank you for this message! I so needed to hear it todayto remind me I am not alone. Sometimes in my hectic life I do feel alone but as a Christian I know I am notand never will be again. I just want to say this month you have all been such a blessing for me with the messages you have given each day. It has been something I have needed in my life right now. Thank you!!

  31. Pam Bodie

Thank you Carlos for this wonderful message! I am quick to forget that God is stronger and mightier than any problem I may have and I need to turn to him!

  32. Teresa

I have cried that cry many times. Especially now … with going through ANOTHER failed marriage!!! Some days I wake up feeling the overwhelming anxiety of “What is in store for me today? What more can happen? What more can I take?”. I know that God hears my cries and sees my broken heart. HE will lead me to where HE wants me to be. I WILL keep my faith focused on HIM. For it’s through HIM that I am saved and through HIM all things are possible.

  33. “We are looking to God,” what a promise from scripture to me when I face difficult times. I cam remember a season of trial in my life when I felt all the walls closing in on me, and in faith and trust I turned my eyes from my lot in life to the Lord of my life.
    Pastor Rick

  34. Kirsten Borges

Very well said. We do know what to do in times of trouble – PRAY. Always the right choice to turn to God and ask for help. He wants us to go to Him with our problems and concerns.

  35. Katie Fountain

My husband and I recently moved cross country. The situation surrounding our move was very overwhelming, and very stressful. Our apartment raised our rent so that we couldn’t live there anymore, apartments I looked at were either too expensive or they had no availability. Along with packing, getting rid of the majority of our things, the transfer case in our 4-runner was going out and we had no money to fix it, so we traded it in literally the Friday before our move. The most overwhelming part of this whole situation was the day our apartment management,!after telling us that we can pay for the 1/2 of the month that we were still there for and not to worry about the last 1/2, came back and told us we had to pay for the rest of the month or face eviction, plus the late fees for not paying the whole rent. We ended up paying the last 1/2 but had no money left over for trading in the care or making the move. The only way we could do all of it was of we asked for money, I hate asking for money, but thankfully a few of our friends came to our rescue. We are getting our last paychecks this weekend and I’m starting to feel overwhelmed, we’ve been here 2 weeks, no jobs, have to pay our car payment, insurance and phones all with whatever money we get from those checks. I honestly don’t know if we’ll be able to or not. If it wasn’t for my parents letting us stay with them, I don’t know where we would be.

This is very comforting as everything does seem extremely overwhelming currently. Thank you, Carlos, for sharing this. It’s a good reminder to turn over our worries and anxieties to God and let the One who has control be in control.

Many times we forget (or never knew about in the first place) those inspiring gems from the Old Testament. I recopied this portion of scripture with Jehosaphat’s prayer to God when I was going through a very trying time. It was an encouragement then, and has encouraged me at other difficult times as well.

God really is bigger and He is stronger than anything we come up against. He does not fail in any way at any time, no matter how we see our circumstances. To top it all off, He loves us with an unfathomable love. It’s not that He wants us to suffer. It’s that He wants us to grow to be more like Jesus, and He wants us to grow closer to Him.

Yes, some situations and struggles are too big for us to handle. By ourselves. Or at all. But if we let Him be Who He is in our lives, we can overcome! Another Old Testament verse says that there is this’impossible’ thing that will be done, but “not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit” the Lord says. That means, yeah, you. Can’t. Even. But God can. He knows more and He’s seen more and He’s all powerful. Of course He’s going to do a better job of rescuing you than you can. 🙂 Rest in that.

I’m so thankful for this devotion today; it spoke directly to me. My husband and I have also just navigated our first year of marriage, moved to Denver for work, spend waaay too much on rent, experienced illnesses, the loss of jobs, the loss of 2 vehicles, and the loss of our sweet 10.5yr old boxer, all with no family around to lean on. It’s been a challenging year, and we often have cried out to God to help us because we just don’t know what to do. We want to follow His path for us, and we will continue to trust Him just like Jehoshpaphat. Thanks for today’s devotion!

Thanks for sharing your story with us! We are praying for you and your husband to see God in all the details – especially when it seems He isn’t present.

Fully get this one. Life does get so overwhelming and this past spring & summer it just seemed like it would never let up. Issue after issue, problems in every facet of my life and it just kept raining down. I felt like I was going to break I was pulled in so many directions and as much as I prayed for relief it did not come. I then began to pray that the lesson be learned for what is ahead so that I might be prepared. I truly felt I couldn’t take another thing.

Little did I know that the time would come so soon when I took guardianship of my grandson the end of the summer from a situation of one parent with a drug addiction and the other indifferent to my grandson and his needs causing him to endure gross neglect and basically him raising himself. He came to me broken emotionally, suffering greatly academically and in great need of nurturing, security, structure and stability. It is now raining down harder then ever and just doesn’t let up but I know now that God but the struggle before me earlier to prepare me for this battle. It has been exhausting and life changing but it will save my grandson’s life in the end. My days are even more overwhelming now, starting at 4 am and ending 10-11 at night as I have a full time job with an hour and a half commute each way, a working farm that must be tended every day, dealing with the school and the calls and meetings and with the notes home from them with issues. Plus tutoring classes 3x/week, therapy, doctor & dentist appointments and cub scouts as I attempt to give my grandson normalcy to life in a way he has never seen. Plus dealing with the death of a beloved family dog followed by a horse that meant a great deal to me. Now dealing with hurricane Matthew damage and all that it entails.

I thought earlier there was no way I could take anything more yet my struggles doubled. The difference now is I now why the struggle was placed in front of me earlier this year and I now what I’m fighting for now so though I am barely hanging on I am at peace. My God will not forsake me and will give me the strength to carry on. Thank You, Way-Fm for being there too. It’s true- always the right song at the right time. You help sooth my soul. Be Blessed- I am.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Kathy, wow, thank you for sharing! We are going to be praying for your grandson and the hurts that need to be healed in his life and praying for you and all that you are doing – that you will experience supernatural strength, patience, provision, all that you need.

My hubby… I am praying that he will see God through me and know that God is the answer. We have been rocked this world with medical issues and we have been praying for God to deliver miracles; he has…. yet my hubby still does not feel the Lord is here. God is good in all things and I will continue to pray even when everything feels sooo hopeless. God is good!

  50. Jami

    Needed this today! Thank you!

I love this verse. In a section of the Bible that gets kinda dry, let’s just be honest, it’s a verse that is so refreshing. I repeat it over and over when times get really tough. I appreciate Carlo’s encouragement that when times get overwhelming to remember that God is there ready to walk it with us.

  52. Profile photo of Snowbird1291

We don’t know what to do sometimes. As Christians we must have faith that God has the blueprints of each of our lives and knows what is best for us. We have to wait on His divine timing. That’s the hardest part in this hectic world we live in. Jeremiah 29:11 is a great reminder of the hope we are blessed with.

  53. This is what I really needed today as I am praying for a friend who is getting ready to say goodbye to her husband of 23 years, the cancer has won. Her whole life is turning upside down. Her oldest son is mad with God. I can’t even imagine waking up everyday with the same nightmare she is experiencing. I will pass this along to her as I know she needs to read something that gives her hope.
Thank you WayFM for giving us this daily reading and Bible study. Thank you Carlos for giving us His word.

Sharon, we are so sorry to hear of your friend and her family and the loss. We will be praying for her and her son.

  54. Christina Beeler

While overwhelmed I try to listen for God in the many messages around me. Lyrics from songs, inspirational quotes, sermons, and evenue marques signs. I have strength and hope in each of these places which carried me through the storms of life.

  55. James

I find it hard to hear God’s word when I’m full of anxiety and worry. I plead with him day and night for peace, but the noise in my head is deafening. I continue to pray and cry out to God for peace, guidance, and direction. At times I feel peace and I thank him with all my heart.

    • Profile photo of Unathi

I’m praying for you, James. It’s difficult to hear God when the enemy is screaming lies in your head to make you worth. Please try to get God’s words of promise into your heart and mind so that you’ll be able to stand firm in the face of the anxiety the Satan tries to bring into your life.

    • Teepee

When Satan attacks at night I repeat Psalm 4:8. ” In peace I will lie down and sleep for the Lord my God makes me dwell in safety.” and when Satan tries to drag me back into the pit, I pray Psalm 40 verses one through three. Praying for you James.

  56. Vicki Bethel

This lesson is speaking very loudly to me today, with the recent death of my father, trying to navigate college decisions and cost for my son who will graduate this year, and basically keep up with an every rising economy which makes my living pay check to pay check even harder I barely keep my head above water, some days I feel I cannot catch my breath before another wave hits me. But I continue to go to him in prayer, and to hold onto my faith just as my father taught me, I continue to wake up daily, go to work and feel loved by my family and friends so I know that he is there and listening.

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Vicki, praying that you experience the peace of God as you grieve the loss of your Dad and that you experience the provision of God in your day-to-day life!

  57. Diane

So im driving to work and I hear becca talk on the radio about the devotional today and what it’s about. This is great encouragement for today! I’m feeling worn and overwhelmed and starting to wonder if the Lord hears my prayers.

    • Profile photo of mrromero5

Hang in there the battle is won we have the victory. He hears you…

    • Profile photo of WAY-FM

Praying for you! Today’s devotional also made me think of the verse in Psalm (61:1-3) that talks about God hearing our cries and the plea from David to be led to the Rock – God – who is higher than anything.

  61. Profile photo of mrromero5

To me this scripture hits me hard, because God uses me in a lot of situations, so the enemy attacks me in all directions. where I work there aren’t a lot of Christians and it gets hard to deal with many situations. So life knocks you on the ground and that is like the scripture says won’t you stop them, this mighty army. I work at a Prison so you can understand what I might be going through. Also the negativity people have towards law enforcement. There will be times when you think everything is getting good but all of a sudden you’re hit with a storm, car starts to mess up and you have to use that money you had for Christmas and other stuff you wanted to use it for. Or there are times that you are going through many trials with family and friends, and it is so bad it just knocks you down and it seems as if you are all alone and you keep asking for help from God. I know if you keep hanging in it will get better. So this scripture speaks to me on the things that I am presently going through. Thanks for the inspiration, and obedience.

    • Profile photo of mrromero5

As I read through some of these comments and realize that God hears us all. I remember one time when I was starting up a campus crusade for Christ at a college in Clovis NM, The teachers and staff were all against it. I remember God showing me a picture of a telephone and a concert. I was like what is this. He told me it is your connection to me”Cell phone”. Then I asked why the concert, He said because there is to much noise around you and you can’t hear me. Then He said “FOCUS ON ME”. So I got to my knees and prayed, and he provided. When we are in a storm it is sometimes hard when everything is going on around to pay attention when everything falling around us, to hear GOD, We need to be Still. Thanks for this scripture it has helped me to realize that GOD is bigger than my problems.

This time of year is always tough from this youth pastors position. Trunk or Treat, Operation Christmas Child, Girl’s Winter Retreat, Christmas play then start planning the new year and figuring a budget for it all. Get’s overwhelming from time to time. I actually get a lift out of it though…when this happens, I have learned that this is when I really need to just turn it over to the one who is in control. When I do that, it is amazing what gets done!

The best thing to do in an overwhelming situation is to cry out to God. In fact, we shouldn’t wait until it is overwhelming to cry out to Him, because maybe it wouldn’t become overwhelming if we put more things in our lives into His hands! I’m talking to whoever reads this, but I’m also trying to get it into MY head. I need God, every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year! The Bible tells us to “pray without ceasing” and that’s great advice! I’ll be in prayer for you, Carlos. God loves you.

  76. Mystique Hewitt

Thank you!! It’s nice to be reminded I am not alone!

Thank you Carlos, I need to keep reminding myself every day to look to God for encouragement and support. Having lost most of my relatives in the last 2 years, as well as my wife, it has been one major change after the other, including that my company asked me to retire after 31 yrs. I am now teaching teenagers at my church, I want to share my faith and experience with them.

  81. Profile photo of Shannaw Martin

When you don’t know what else to do…just pray!! Get on a prayer chain. We have one for our church. It really works. I know that God hears or prayers even if it’s a one liner!! Thx for the reminder Carlos!! The Jabez prayer is another quick but powerful prayer found in 1 Chronicles 4:10. If you had a name that meant pain you would want a powerful prayer to turn your life around too.

This us a wonderful reminder that no matter how crazy or out of control things seem to get, God is in control of it all. We can always turn to Him and trust that He has a plan and is in control. None of the things that seem out of control to us are a surprise to Him.

  84. Profile photo of valeriebmomof3

Thank you Carlos for reminding us that God always has our back. He knows what is coming, and the things that surprise us are no surprise to Him. As Luke 18:27 says, Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” So often, we want to DO something to change our situations. Sometimes the only thing that we need to DO is to trust God, and cry out to Him.

  85. Amanda

This is exactly what I needed today!! My family is going through a very difficult situation and I often find myself thinking “I can’t” or “I don’t know what to do anymore.” Reading this is reminds me that even though I can’t God can.

  87. Vilma Pina

When my daughter passed away suddenly, I was in shock and just going through the motions. A year and a half later, I am finally reacting to the fact that she is no longer with me and that I will not see her again until it is my time to enter the eternal life. That notion has been very disturbing to me and I found myself lost, not knowing what direction my life was supposed to go in without her. I prayed to God daily for guidance, for Him to lead me to the path of my recovery. I was presented with an opportunity to start up a support group for bereaved parents. I felt that it is what He wanted me to do. My hope is that in helping others, I will be able to help myself get through this tragedy.

  93. Veronica

I really hope god hears my prayer

  94. Cody Deno

I know how that feels, not knowing what to do.
In my senior year of high school I put a ton of pressure on myself to try to figure out what I was going to do for college, and it overwhelmed me. I struggled with anxiety and depression; it got so bad I needed to see a counselor and get medicine. When it got to that point, I finally broke down and cried out to God, “Lord, show me what you want me to do after high school! I don’t know what to do!” This helped immensely because at that point I started to realize that I didn’t need to have all the answers and that I dont have all the answers. God is in control, and He has all the answers, but He reveals them on His timeline, not mine. This lifted the pressure off me and helped me relax.

  95. Melanie

Being overwhelmed is also a time to show God how we value him. Even with little time if we take a moment to be thankful, it can be at a stop light or waiting in a grocery line or car line, then God knows our true heart

  96. Becky Kissler

Wow, needed to hear that today. Sometimes I feel so lost and don’t know what to pray, thank goodness we have a God who knows what I need without me even having to be able to speak it.

  97. Profile photo of Leahmarie711

Our God is good. He is faithful and never forsakes those who seek him. He also never gives us too much that we cannot handle it. The overwhelming feeling of this crazy fast paced lifestyle can be a bit discouraging. Seeing the world we live in being so fallen brings me heartache. I’m grateful for this devotion to help me remember to stand strong and trust that God is in control of all things.

  98. Amber V

This was encouraging to hear because I have recently (within the last year) moved to a new state 9 hours away from my family to advance a relationship, started a new job, and started my graduate degree. At times everything feels very overwhelming and I daily fight to keep trying. I think my problem is that I don’t seek God enough for these everyday challenges and feeling that I can’t deal with all on my own.

Going through a divorce after 21 years of marriage was overwhelming and devastating. I couldn’t eat, breath or think. I pressed into God’s word and it gave me the peace and courage I needed to move on with my life.

  103. Profile photo of Susan413

When I feel overwhelmed, I pray for God’s mercy (naturally), but I remember that Paul really gives up great advice when in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 he says to never stop praying. And I believe what made bible characters so resilient was “prayer. ” Then David tells us in 1 Chronicles 28:20 that God doesn’t fail us or forsake us.

So on day 2 of my 3-day migraines when I. Can’t. Even. I remember that God is with me, he doesn’t fail me, and He knows when I can’t do my longer prayers due to pain. That’s when He accepts my repetition on a loop of, “Lord have mercy!”

  104. Summer Mabrey

I needed to hear this today.

Love knowing that I’m not supposed to have the answers or the strength to deal with my current situation. That God has a plan and He is in control and that I can trust in Him to work it out and get me through.

Sounds so simple, in truth it is about letting go and letting God be in control. We often think that are the ones in control. Just let go and let God.

During Chris Tomlin’s Worship Night Louis Guiglio’s message was on the exact same Scripture. Thanks, Carlos, for bringing it to my mind again. I know it can be a chaotic time when too much is happening too fast and we become drowning victims in “I can’t do this; it’s too much”!! No, we can’t, but God certainly can and will provide a way. He is faithful and true, a promise keeper.

So glad that God is in control and I don’t have to be anymore…

I can testify to this feeling of being overwhelmed. A few years ago I found myself being attacked physically through hip pain. I was in the ministry teaching children and working another job. Neither had insurance coverage. The pain increased over the course of 3 long hard years. It got so horrific my walk looked like a troll. I could not put socks, pants or shoes on that I couldn’t just slide my foot into. I was only able to work about 3 hours a day. I was being judged by believers who deemed my faith not strong enough for God to heal me or that I had U confessed sin leading to the delay of God’s healing. I was up against the possibility of not just being homeless but helpless. I cried out to God, “Lord, what is about to happen to me?!” At that time Big Daddy Weave had a song out “Overwhelmed” which to this day is my hearts anthem and war cry. I chose to be OVERWHELMED by God rather than my circumstances. It deepened my worship to the point as I pressed into God, the pain would literally go away as I became united with my Father Spirit to spirit. It was beautiful. God in His grace and mercy eventually provided a way! I now have two new hips for which I am very thankful. And I still allow God to overwhelm me with Himself rather than giving in to “the fear of…”! Thank you for the theme of suffering this month. I am reminded of James chapter 1 as he says count it all joy when we encounter trials. This is hard to wrap our minds around. But the suffering produces (there is a good outcome!) endurance which leads to perseverance which finds us “lacking in nothing”. The eternal has fully developed in us! Consider it all joy my brother!

I had a CAN’T EVEN moment yesterday that about took me for a loop. Reading this today reconfirms that I am not alone. Thank you!!

Being overwhelmed is a part of life and growing up, as well as growing in Christ. If we never did face such things in this life, we’d never grow up and never be the kind of person God wants us to be. It’s obvious in many people in America alone, that many, even in a church building, have never grown up nor grown in Christ, but merely find themselves content and complacent to sit and reap the benefits of religiosity in a supposed “Christian” land that truthfully shows no sign of the real Christ in their daily lives, but yet try to feign worship once a week, at best.

When we finally turn all our life over to Him, then that is when we can truthfully see more than what this world holds, and know who holds it in a small portion of His hands as He measures the span of the universe.

It’s too easy to become involved deeply in the things of this world, even as Christians, and forget the real reason and purpose of our visit here. It’s not to conquer, claim, or destroy, but to love, and that love has to be shown unconditionally to all humanity, not just a select few.

If we truly want and desire to live stress free, then trust in God alone is the key, laying all our problems and trials of the day at the foot of the Cross every evening before we lay our heads down for sleep, and being that obedient person God was willing to die for when He looks inside and sees even the best part of His creation.

There will come a time of stress free life on this Earth, but that time is not yet here, but we can still trust Him in the middle of the storm, and all the animosity this world can throw at us, and will everyday of the week.

I have been there. We had our son exactly one year after we were married. We were exhausted. I barely slept and I was irritable all of the time. At the end of the day, my husband would come home and the only thing I can pray was give me strength. Give me strength to cook, to clean, to love, to be kind…just to move. God was there through it all. He heard my prayer then as He hears me now.

Prayer does not have to come with our requests of how God should handle our situations. He is smart enough to come under with his own solutions even if we don’t see one yet!

This is exactly what I needed to read today! Thank you for the reminder that we can always look to Jesus for help and hope, even amid desperate situations. I am trusting in God’s faithfulness today.

I recently went through a really difficult time at work and I cried out to God. I had nothing else to do and I just want to encourage anyone else that God is ALWAYS FAITHFUL. He carried me and is still carrying me through this situation. I trust in Him completely and trust He will continue to carry me through any situation life throws at me and my family. All those who are going through a difficult time just keep crying out to God and He will never fail you.

  129. Liz Vannier

Our family went through this same thing the past couple of years. It has been difficult, but we keep looking up and God is consistantly bringing us through. His timing is always perfect, even though it is when our fingers are barely still holding on.

  130. Jenara

Wow! This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!

I compare “the mighty army” to Satan, his strategies and sin. We alone are powerless against him and his evilness, but with God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit on our side we have victory over him, sin and Death itself. We need to remember that we are not alone, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are with us. Also, there are brothers & sisters in our community to help us overcome our temptations and other struggles.

Alone we are weak, but together we are strong!

  132. Kathleen Kauffman

I often do not know what to do, but if I pray to God He gives me the answers. I just need to trust Him enough.

Another comment: I have reached the end to where we are at in this. It’s a great study. I just wished I persevered through other studies. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to be here!
