Following Jesus is a serious thing – but sometimes we can take it too seriously. Carlos (from The Carlos & Joy Show) loves how Jesus celebrates with us like we see in today’s story!

Read (from the New Living Translation)

Jesus is anything but boring. He loves celebrating with you!! See that for yourself in today’s story.

Luke 15:11-32

To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.

“A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.

“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’

“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’

“But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on. ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.’

“The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!’

“His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!’”

Note: If you’ve read the Bible before, you may notice there are no chapter or verse marks in today’s reading. We got this idea from the Immerse Bible. It’s true we worship but do we truly worship in celebration! Sometimes we are too busy with a critical spirit when instead we should show grace and celebrate when the prodigal return. After all, ain’t no party like a holy ghost party! Have a great day!

Yes, great joy like when we celebrate a baby coming into our family. We love our new babies whether they have big ears or big nose, hair or no hair. It’s always the heart, the soul [1 Samuel 16.7].

The prodigal son is you and me and we were once dead. Jesus celebrated the day we came home. We should celebrate that He is a part of our lives.

Yes, more smiles please … more inner joy!!

Sometimes I wrestle with this passage. The Lost boy only came back because he was hungry. Sometimes I feel like you can only read so much into a parable because it was just a story Jesus told to relate to people. But I struggle with this because I wonder how sincere the Lost boy was, yet his father threw a party for him

Only the Lord knows the lost son’s heart that is for him to wrestle with. I know the Lords arms are always open wide with love and that is enough for me. Can see the struggle you comment on also. The Lord loves all.

Yeah, I know I have to ask the Lord to help me not judge like the older brother, as easy as that is based on the fact. Instead, I have to trust the omniscience & love of God. He sure is magnanimous in His grace … especially to me!

WAY-FM

The son’s physical hunger was used to help him hunger for his real home. Jesus included the confession – “Father, I have sinned….” I’m glad our Father God knows our heart & as we know Him better, we become even more repentant & grateful So glad for GRACE … that invites us to Him and helps us to grow!!

I feel like you also have to be aware of the fact that that the Prodigal Son trusted that his father would at least tolerate his presence, even as a servant. Sure, he waited until he absolutely had to, but he still went back. Just like we should

Praise God! One of my most favorite groups my church does is Celebrate Recovery. It is amazing to go every Friday and have a party for people that are having struggles and are working through them with Jesus. Thank you Lord for the amazing celebrations in life!

WAY-FM

That is so cool that you guys do that, CarrieAnn. You get it!!!

Celebrate Recovery changed my life and how I perceive God. It was there I got over my criticism of people who use drugs and see them as people. My father used drugs and abused my sister and I. God used people like him to help me learn how to love all people.

I’ve been lost a few times and know how important it is to ask for forgiveness. This is a great reminder that no matter how big or small…ask for forgiveness and it shall be forgiven. Forgiving a family member can be quite difficult at times and may not always be understood by all family members, but Jesus knows our hearts. Glad he likes to party! I can rejoice and give Jesus praise and party too! =)

WAY-FM

Lord, forgive me for being the “older brother”. Lord, help me delete my critical, comparative heart and instead display Your great joy!!

I understand what the parable is saying, but I also get why the older son was upset. It would seem it wasn’t so much that he wasn’t glad his brother was back but that there was such a fuss made about it when no one bothered to make a fuss over him contently doing the right thing. It is almost like saying well if you turn away from your family, or God, and then come back we will celebrate you. However, if you just stay on the straight and narrow and always do the right thing then we will appreciate… Read more »

Wow. We should celebrate the lost ones coming home again with a party. It wouldn’t be hard to incorporate into potlucks we already do.

It is true we take the ones we love for granted, especially the ones who are with us daily. However, God sees them. He is the Great El Roi, the One who sees me. He is the only One we need to be concerned about. So when I start feeling like the “other brother” I need to repent and give it to God. He will help me, us, work through these feelings. And that is all they are…feelings, not our reality. When we start feeling like the other brother that is Satan attacking our hearts and minds. Our reality is that… Read more »
