Read (from the New Living Translation)

Hebrews 4:15

15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

Go Deep

Joni Eareckson Tada speaks candidly about her struggle to re-discover who God is in light of quadriplegia.

The 10 words that changed everything and became Joni’s personal life theme? “God permits what He hates to accomplish what He loves.”

Notes from the Beyond Suffering Bible

Come Boldly – Have you ever felt as if you’ve disappointed God one too many times? We find ourselves mired in weakness and sin, wondering if our perfect God will lose patience with us, or even worse, that he has already lost patience with us. In these verses, we are assured that we can come confidently to God’s throne, where Jesus understands our weakness and waits to pour out his grace and mercy.

Thanks to Joni for her testimony of trusting God through all of the brokenness.
God allows what He hates to accomplish what He loves. The suffering we experience will accomplish the goal of us bearing the fruit of the spirit, if we handle it properly by turning it all over to God and trust Him. Patience, endurance, compassion, kindness, joy, gentleness… In short, love. Learning to deal with the suffering in the right way, with the proper attitude WILL grow us to be more like Christ. And this is what He wants. Jesus is our example. God wants us to be like Him. It is in being like Jesus that we bring God’s kingdom to the world around us.

Thank you, Joni! I have a co- worker that is angry at God because of the last 10 years of his life. I’ve been struggling with how to help him so I’ve been in prayer. You put it in such great perspective that I hope I can share this with him. God Bless

Wow what an eye opener that is. And to read that verse again after listening to her, wow! Thank you for opening up and sharing. That is true and sometimes us, and I hate to say it but us in America we don’t think we should have to suffer like that. God didn’t say it would be easy to love Him. But when is love easy. This is a great reminder of when suffering does come, we still have to have faith in Christ.

I think what gets me in those 10 words “God permits what HE hates, to accomplish what he loves” is that word “permits”. GOD doesn’t want us to suffer, he wanted a world without suffering, but he permits it so that we can learn to turn to him and seek his salvation. Thank you so much Joni and God Bless!!

Wow! The verse from Revelations 12:11 come to mind…”And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.” This is so encouraging to remind us to endure whatever He has for us and use it for good. Thank you, Joni, for sharing your story!

Wow! I get it now…I understand suffering and brokenness now. When I look at me now compared with me 10 years or so ago when I first became a Christian (and decided to really walk the walk, not just talk the talk) I see an amazing difference in me! I have patience, I have so much more compassion now. My heart breaks for those who have lost a loved one, those who are suffering, those who have no hope. I now have a refined faith, a stretched hope, a longing for Heaven (my true home), a love for the Word, and a deeper trust in God. I once prayed and asked Jesus to help me see people through His eyes, and now I do more and more! I’ll watch the evening news and cry for people who lost everything in a flood, or tornado, or who became a victim of a violent crime, or all the other horrible things that happen to people. After I cry, I pray for them, asking God to be with them and to comfort them. I know that my suffering and brokenness has been a positive thing in my life. I know that sounds weird, but it is a positive thing. I’m becoming more like Jesus every day. I am getting stronger. My endurance is stronger. God loves me and you so much that he “permits what He hates to accomplish what He loves!” He wants me to be like Jesus, and that’s what I want also. When I’m broken or suffering, that’s when I need God the most, and it’s also the time that I feel closer to Him. I know He knows how I feel and He will be near me and see me through it. God is awesome!

She is also confined to a wheelchair with the crippling disease of Frederick’s Ataxia and has found hope and endurance through Joni’s unmovable faith in God even after a devastating divorce. I was delighted to be able to hear from her today, as she has also been inspiring to me! Thanks Joni and THanks WAYFM!

  33. Gina

Amazing!!!!!!! The answer to our suffering. Thank you Joni.

  34. Elizabeth Reiff

I appreciated the words God gave Joni. I have a chronic disease that causes me constant pain. There is not a day that passes that I don’t have pain. Some days the pain is tolerable and some days I want my life to end. The pain has taught me some things about myself and my relationship to God. I found so much encouragement fro her devotional. It helped my put my focus back on the bigger picture and not on my circumstances.

  35. Omali Longwell

This message was so POWERFUL that all I can say is WOW & PRAISE GOD!!!

  36. Profile photo of Susan

“God permits what He hates to accomplish what He loves.” Wow! That is tough to accept sometimes, because we don’t want it permitted! But I love that philosophy. Thanks for sharing & encouraging.

  37. Diane Schreiber

I used to ask God why things happen to me, my family, the ones I love. Now I know that everything happens for a reason. We may not know the why at the moment but we can use our trials to help someone who is hurting in the future!!

  38. Profile photo of bridget0394

I am weak, sometimes a complainer and negative. Thanks for reminding me that my suffering is nothing compared to what Jesus suffered.

  39. Profile photo of skyla

Thank you for that. I’m not suffering nearly as bad as people in this world, but I am still dealing with things in my life and sometimes I really do not get what God wants me to do. This testimony helped me realize that some things are not meant to be in my life forever and that I should go out and share my testimony more often. Thank you so much.

  40. Cody Deno

I used to feel like I had to be perfect and follow all of God’s commandments or God wouldn’t love me or something like that. Over the past few years I’ve come to know that is not true, though. I know that God loves me no matter what I do, what I say or how far I stray from Him. His grace never ends!

  41. Kathy Bullcoming

A BIG Thank you to Joni’s testimony! I heard it on my way home from work one evening. I was inspired by Joni’s life years ago as a teenager. I read a book by her/about her then, before she was married, I guess it would have been not that long after her accident. It was inspiring to me, as a young person, how someone going through such difficulty stayed strong and encouraged.

I needed that kind of story as well as other peoples stories I came across back then, to endure and reflect on throughout my life. I am now in my fifties, married/divorced, raised 4 children as a single mother, and now have grandchildren, as I continue on the road of life with struggles and heartache as we all do, even as Christians.

Thank you Joni for your continued inspiration and encouragement with your testimony!

  42. Sherrie Morin

I find this true in my life … thank you Jesus

  43. Michele

  44. Yolander Jackson

Thank you for sharing your story. It took a lot I am sure for you to reach the other side of your tragedy.God bless you.

  45. Kathleen Kauffman

I am so selfish. God is bigger than all these things, but he’s got my back, and He has the victory. If He can die and me along with him then there is life too with both me and you!
